Special Notes

  • Your MRI exam will be quite simple and painless.
  • A technologist will help you get positioned on a padded table.
  • We will make sure you are as comfortable as possible due to the length of time required for the scan. Exams last anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour.
  • The MRI scanner is cylindrical and is approximately six feet long. The part of the body to be scanned must be placed in the center of the magnet (cylinder). For some exams, you will be placed in the magnet head-first, and for other exams feet-first.
  • You will be asked to remain very still. On some abdominal scans, you may be asked to hold your breath. Detailed instructions will be given by the technologist.
  • Some MRI exams require an injection of contrast (dye). If this is necessary, the technologist will tell you.
  • During the scan, you will hear a rather loud tapping noise. Do not be alarmed, as this is normal. Due to the noise level, you will be given ear plugs.
  • Before entering the scan room, you will be asked to remove all metal objects from your person. It is important that you inform the technologist of any implants, such as apacemaker, prosthesis, surgical clips or if you have had metal removed from your eyes (example: welding accident). It is very important to remove materials that may be affected by the magnet, such as coins, keys, hair pins, watches and credit cards. You will be given a locker to safely lock these items away.
  • Parents will not be allowed to remain in the scan room with patients who require sedation.
