Thomasville, NC Thomasville Medical Center Board of Directors voted at their November board meeting to launch a tobacco free campus in 2007. Thomasville Medical Center is targeting April 2nd for launching its smoke and tobacco-free campus for all patients, visitors, employees, physicians and volunteers.
Other Novant facilities announced such plans in October. "Our decision to create a tobacco-free atmosphere supports our mission of 'improving the health of our communities one person at a time,'" said Andrea West, Director of Human Resources for Thomasville Medical Center.
"Years ago, our medical center took important steps in prohibiting tobacco use or the sale or tobacco products inside our building. We are now extending this to our entire campus to further advance health and safety."
At last count, 57 hospital campuses in North Carolina have become 100% tobacco-free and approximately 30 to 40 additional hospitals in the state are in the planning process to also become tobacco-free campuses.
Physicians and employees are in the process of receiving communications about the new tobacco-free policy. To educate patients and visitors, a comprehensive educational campaign will be launched. "Employees also will play a big part in communicating the new policy to visitors who might not be aware of the change," explained West.
Thomasville Medical Center is a member of Novant Health a not-for-profit integrated healthcare system based in North Carolina. Novant has been nationally recognized as the "Best in Industry for Working Mothers" by Working Mother Magazine. Novant Health was named winner of the 2004 Codman Award, presented by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, for excellence in improving the quality and safety of health care. Additionally, Novant Health has been ranked 8th in the nation by the 2006 Verispan Top 100 Integrated Healthcare Networks, published in Modern Healthcare magazine.
