Thomasville Medical Center has announced plans to expand its Emergency Department from a 10 bed to a 27 bed facility. The new 24,000 sqare foot ED will triple the present size of the department. The ED at TMC serviced 22,5000 patients last year - a number that is expected to be surpassed in 2006, based on numbers from the first quarter.
The new facility will house a 6 bed fast tract center, two orthopaedic rooms, a behavioral health room and five bed Chest Pain Center. There will also be a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) room, staffed with nurses trained in forensic evidence collection. The current SANE room at TMC has been in operation more than 3 years, and the is the only hospital in the county with this feature. In addition, the new ED will have its own Radiology unit and CT scan, which will contain ED services to the new unit, without patients having to leave the emergency area for x-rays and scans.
Kim Smith, TMC Emergency Department Nurse Manager, expects the addition of the new ED to greatly enhance the hospital's ability to meet the growing needs of the community. "The biggest benefit is to the community," Smith said. "We want to offer state of the art facilities as well as state of the art technology to give the best urgent or emergency care as possible to the community."
The new ED will be located at the front of the hospital campus making it more visible to visitors and accessible to incoming ambulances.
TMC President, Gabrielle Causby is excited about the new facility and expansion of the hospital. "We are thrilled and eager to be moving forward with the building of our new Emergency Department," Causby said. "The new location and greatly expanded space will allow us to continue dealing with our patients' emergencies even faster. Our healthcare organization is growing by leaps and bounds as evidenced by the announcement of our sister hospital Forsyth Medical Center's filing for a certificate of need earlier this week to build a new hospital in Kernersville. TMC is committed to its mission of meeting the health care needs of Davidson County and the surrounding areas. And here in Davidson County, we will continue to do so by adding services and physicians."
The $8 million construction project is expected to begin in September 2006 and completed in the fall of 2007.
