Thomasville Nancy Holland, Chairperson of theThomasville Medical Center Foundation, announced at the August 2003 Board meeting the most recent recipient of a full educational scholarship for the radiology technology program at Davidson County Community College, Tom Kelley. Kelley, a maintenance specialist with Baptist Childrens Home, is married and the father of three. He says he has always wanted to work in the medical field. Through the generous giving of the Thomasville Medical Center Foundation, this will be possible, says Kelley. I also look forward to being part of the team at Thomasville Medical Center to serve our community with the best healthcare possible continues Kelley.
In an effort to provide qualified nurses and radiology technologists for Thomasville Medical Center patients in the future, the Board of Directors of the Thomasville Medical Center Foundation established the scholarship program in 2001. The purpose of this endowment is to ensure our hospital continues to be staffed with highly qualified personnel and it also assists well-deserving students in their career plans, said Linda Hunt, Executive Director of the Thomasville Medical Center Foundation. In addition to the radiology scholarship, the Foundation also has also awarded nursing scholarships. Our first nursing recipient has graduated and is now working with us, says Hunt. Priority for these scholarships is granted to applicants from Davidson County and/or those individuals that have served as volunteers at our medical center, said Hunt. Students from any county are eligible. If the need arises, we will add additional medical specialties to the scholarships available.
There is a nation wide personnel shortage in many areas of the medical field forcing employers to be creative in their recruitment efforts to attract qualified applicants. Efforts include sign-on bonuses and flex schedules. The Foundation established the medical scholarships to ensure qualified personnel for the future. The scholarships allow us to target and encourage promising students to stay in our community and work at Thomasville Medical Center after their education says Gabrielle Causby, President of Thomasville Medical Center. The scholarships are an all around win-win situation benefiting the community, the medical center, the student, and of course, our patients. These scholarships are just another example of our continued commitment to meet the needs of our community one person at a time.
