Local County agencies team up with Susan G. Komen to provide free mammograms
| A grant from the Susan G. Komen Foundation will fund more than 400 screening mammograms and additional diagnostics in Davidson County. |
Thomasville Medical Center, along with the Davidson County Health Department, Davidson County Medical Ministries and Lexington Memorial Hospital recently received a $44,935 grant from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in a collaborative effort to make sure local woman receive a screening mammogram.
The grant will fund more than 400 screening mammograms and additional diagnostics if needed.
The American Cancer Society says the goal of a screening mammogram is to find cancer when it is still too small to be felt by a woman or her doctor. Finding small breast cancers early by a screening mammogram greatly improves a womans chance for successful treatment.
Davidson County has experienced an increased number of people affected by lay offs or reduced work hours. As a result, there are a lot of women who dont qualify for an annual mammogram or their insurance doesnt cover it. A recent study in the April 25, 2003 of the New York Times sites a 4% decrease in deaths from breast cancer since the introduction of a mammography program.
The collaborative grant also provides funding for biopsies and visits with a surgeon if a problem is found during the initial screening.
