A condition where the ability to fall asleep and stay asleep is difficult. One of the most common sleep problems, insomnia can be caused by a wide variety of physical and/or psychological problems.

If you experience difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or experiencing a restful night's sleep, you might be suffering from insomnia.

What is Insomnia?

Insomnia is defined as the perception of, or complaint of, inadequate or poor-quality sleep due to one or more of the following:

  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Waking up frequently during the night with difficulty returning to sleep
  • Waking up too early in the morning
  • Non-refreshing sleep and daytime fatigue.

Insomnia can be classified as:

  • Transient (short-term): symptoms lasting from a single night to a few weeks
  • Intermittent: episodes occur from time to time
  • Chronic: occurs most nights and lasts for a month or more.

There are many different factors that contribute to Insomnia. These include:

  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Physical illness
  • Irregular schedules
  • Caffeine consumption
  • Circadian rhythm disorders
  • Drugs
  • Pain
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
