This program consists of three-hour group sessions designed to provide in-depth
education on managing gestational diabetes and preexisting diabetes and pregnancy.
Gestational Diabetes
For patients with gestational diabetes, the curriculum includes:
- Explanation of gestational diabetes
- Risks to the baby
- Prevention of type 2 diabetes postpartum
- Blood glucose monitoring and glucose goals
- Exercise
- Stress management
- Nutrition education and individualized meal plans
- Signs and symptoms of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia
- Goal-setting
- Insulin instruction.
Preexisting Diabetes
For patients with preexisting diabetes, the curriculum includes:
- Explanation of risks for mother and baby
- Blood glucose monitoring and glucose goals
- Exercise
- Stress management
- Nutrition education and individualized meal plans
- Signs and symptoms of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia
- Goal-setting
- Insulin instruction.
One-week and postpartum follow-up is provided for each participant. Ongoing follow-up
is provided throughout pregnancy, as needed.
