Diabetes and Pregnancy Program

Diabetes and Pregnancy

This program consists of three-hour group sessions designed to provide in-depth education on managing gestational diabetes and preexisting diabetes and pregnancy.

Gestational Diabetes

For patients with gestational diabetes, the curriculum includes:

  • Explanation of gestational diabetes
  • Risks to the baby
  • Prevention of type 2 diabetes postpartum
  • Blood glucose monitoring and glucose goals
  • Exercise
  • Stress management
  • Nutrition education and individualized meal plans
  • Signs and symptoms of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia
  • Goal-setting
  • Insulin instruction.

Preexisting Diabetes

For patients with preexisting diabetes, the curriculum includes:

  • Explanation of risks for mother and baby
  • Blood glucose monitoring and glucose goals
  • Exercise
  • Stress management
  • Nutrition education and individualized meal plans
  • Signs and symptoms of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia
  • Goal-setting
  • Insulin instruction.

One-week and postpartum follow-up is provided for each participant. Ongoing follow-up is provided throughout pregnancy, as needed.
